Resources: Frequently Asked Questions

We know that getting acupuncture for the first time can be intimidating.

I treat a lot of patients who are new to acu and are used to walking patients through it step by step.

What will my first acupuncture session be like?

Our first session will involve extra time for a longer intake so that I can get to know your medical history. You will be asked follow up questions to help me decide how to proceed with the session. Very small, sterile, single use needles will be inserted into acupuncture points, then you will be left to rest for about 30 minutes. I might integrate other modalities into your session such as cupping, trigger point release, electro acupuncture or guasha. These modalities will be explained to you before we begin. At the end of your session I will leave time to answer your questions and discuss follow up.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Minimal discomfort, if any, can be expected during an acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture needles are extremely thin and flexible. Although sensation can be felt on the skin's surface during needling, most would not describe it as pain, you might feel a heavy, or tingly sensation.

Will I feel better right after the treatment?

Some patients feel an immediate improvement, for others it may take a day or so after the treatment to see an improvement. With chronic, long-standing issues, it can take a few treatments to notice a difference. It is not unusual to feel a bit tired or sore after treatment, it is important to pay attention to how you are feeling after treatment.

What should I do before coming in for acupuncture?

Make sure to eat something within a few hours before getting acupuncture. Wear loose fitting clothing so that it's easy to roll up your pants and sleeves.

Do you accept my insurance?

We don't do any third party billing but am happy to provide you with documentation that you can submit to your insurance company.

Do you treat children?

I am happy to treat children provided that they are old enough to be comfortable receiving acupuncture. Please contact me prior to booking for a child so that we can discuss the situation and make sure that I am the right fit for you.

Will I be charged for my appointment if I miss it or cancel last minute?

Please provide 24 hours notice if you need to cancel an appointment. You will be charged the full fee if proper notification is not given.
